Christmas Problem Solving

Here are some Maths problems for you to solve. Bring your answers to Room 5

1) Help Santa solve his Christmas problem

Santa looked outside to see how many of his reindeer and elves were helping
to finish up the final touches before he left for his trip around the world. But, when he looked outside, he could only see their legs. He couldn’t figure out how many elves and reindeer were outside. He counted 50 legs.

Santa wants you to help him figure out how many reindeer and how many elves are helping out.

2) Santa’s Elves

Santa has some very experienced elves and he has some new inexperienced elves. Each experienced elf can wrap 60 presents a day and each newer inexperienced elf can wrap 45 presents per day. Santa has a total of 9 elves who wrap presents. They wrap 510 presents a day.

How many experienced and inexperienced elves does Santa have?
How do you know?

3) Christmas Gift Problem

Sarah went shopping to buy Christmas presents for her family:
A grandmother
A grandfather
2 mothers
2 fathers
2 daughters
2 sons

She finished her shopping and everyone got a gift. She only bought 7 presents. How is this possible

2D Shapes

We worked on 2D Shapes in Mrs Quinn’s Room. Some people worked on geo-boards (Mrs Quinn told us the name). They were exploring how to show different shapes. What do you think?

Other children decided to make shape people. Have you ever met people like the people we made?

Adding

We were adding with our Tens and Units boards. We added numbers like this

   Tens         Units
                  7
 +   1             5

We got strange numbers like 3 Tens and 12 Units. You cannot see that on the 100 square. We learned how to fix it.

We swapped 10 Units for 1 Ten. That’s a fair swap. We made a new Ten to add to the other Tens. Our answer was 4 Tens and 2 Units. That number is 42. 42 is on the 100 square. Well done.

We worked on Mrs Quinn’s interactive whiteboard as well.

More Brainteasers

Well done to Conor, Michael and Leah in Room 7. They solved the puzzles. It took a few days, but they got there.

Here are some more brainteasers. Remember to read each word carefully and to think in different ways. Bring your answers to Room 5.

1.     Tom was standing on one side of the river, and his dog Spot was standing on the other side. "Come on Spot. Here, boy!" shouted Tom. Spot crossed the river, ran to Tom, and got a treat for being a good dog. The amazing thing was that Spot didn't even get wet!

          How did Spot do that?

2.     One day, two mothers and two daughters went shopping for shoes. They each bought one pair of shoes. Altogether, they had three pairs.

          How is this possible?

Brainteasers

Here are some Brainteasers for you. You have to let your brain think in different ways. Please bring your answers to Room 5.

1.     A girl who was just learning to drive went down a one-way street in the wrong direction, but didn't break the law. How come?

2.     How can you throw a ball as hard as you can and have it come back to you, even if it doesn't hit anything, there is nothing attached to it, and no one else catches or throws it?

3.     Two students are sitting on opposite sides of the same desk. There is nothing in between them but the desk. Why can't they see each other?

Graphs

Fruit Survey

We asked all the adults in the school to tell us their favourite fruit. We used a tally to gather the information.

We then made a graph to show the results.

Strawberries were the most popular fruit. Oranges were the least popular. 6 more adults preferred strawberries to oranges.

Later Mrs Quinn showed us how to do graphs on the computer. We tried it.

This is how to do it.
Open Excel
Type in all the information.

Highlight the information.
Click insert.
Click column.
The graph will appear. Easy!

Cooking

I was cooking with Alida today. I made pasta sauce. I chopped onions. I put in a tin of tomatoes. We got some parsley and basil. There was a lovely smell. Mrs Quinn said it was like an Italian restaurant. All the teachers had a taste at lunchtime.
